Did you know that women in nearly all income levels out-do men when it comes to charitable giving?
This is just one reason the Women Build has been a success. I can tell you first hand, from being on site on April 12, that the women out there – the future homeowners and the volunteers - demonstrate incredible physical, mental and emotional strength.
Four of the 31 homes Habitat Broward is scheduled to construct in the next 12-18 months will be sponsored through Women Build – which is designed to empower women to address the affordable housing crisis in their community.
The objectives of the build are to engage support of women to build four affordable single-family homes, empower low-income families to become financially stable through home ownership, increase women’s skills/knowledge and confidence to participate in construction, and revitalize the community.
We have received tremendous support – from WSVN, the late Janet Boyle, AutoNation, Marti Huizenga, City Furniture, Florida Community Bank, Nancy Daly and Lowes – but we need to raise another $70,000.
If you are interesting in helping us achieve this goal, please contact Kenneth Brighton at 954-396-3030 ext. 211 or [email protected], or feel free to message me at [email protected]. The next build event is May 10.
Habitat families attend educational workshops and complete 400 hours of “sweat equity” building their home. The theory of Habitat is essentially that “…by helping people to build their own homes, families are better prepared to maintain their home, themselves and their children” – as our Director of Construction Mary Lou Cubbin explained recently.
Habitat is a wonderful organization to be a part of – Allied has been supporting Habitat since 2002 with donations of construction materials to the Habitat Re-Store in Fort Lauderdale. As part of the organization's leadership team now, I can honestly say that Habitat Broward has been and continues to be one of the most established, mission-focused and meaningful non-profit organizations in our community.
